Dr. Michael J. Simonton is a Lecturer of Anthropology and Director of the Celtic Studies Program at Northern Kentucky University (NKU). He holds a Ph.D. from the National University of Ireland, Galway, and academic degrees from The Ohio State University and the University of Dayton. His research focuses on cultural anthropology, with emphases on aging in northwest Ireland, Celtic migrations, and psychological anthropology. He has conducted longitudinal studies on life courses in Ireland, institutionalization in nursing homes, and comparative studies of Celtic and Afro-Caribbean cultures.
Dr. Simonton teaches courses such as Cultural Anthropology, Celtic Europe, and the Anthropology of Aging. He has authored Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (2012) and contributed entries to the Encyclopedia of Anthropology and World Mark Encyclopedia of Religious Practices. His awards include the NKU Faculty of Distinction Award (2006 & 2007) and editorial board membership of the Kentucky Journal of Anthropology and Sociology.
He advises the Celtic Studies Club and integrates fieldwork in Ireland for students. His interests extend to furniture building, painting, and family life.
