Michael J. Telch is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, where he also serves as the founding director of the Laboratory for the Study of Anxiety Disorders and former Director of Clinical Training. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University (1983) and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in behavioral medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
His research focuses on understanding and treating anxiety-related disorders, including PTSD, agoraphobia, and panic disorders. He has pioneered studies on fear extinction, exposure therapy, and the integration of neuroscientific findings into clinical practices. His work also explores the role of CO2 reactivity, hormonal responses, and genetic factors in anxiety disorders.
Dr. Telch has advised numerous graduate students who have become leaders in anxiety disorder research. He has held leadership roles at the National Institute of Mental Health and contributed to the Anxiety Disorders Education Program. His awards include Fellowships from the Association for Psychological Science and the Association for the Advancement of Preventative Psychology.
He teaches courses such as PSY 341K (Stress/Anxiety/Their Disorders) and PSY 396 (Advanced Behavior Pathology), emphasizing empirical methods and clinical applications. His lab integrates translational research, combining clinical trials with experimental psychopathology.
