Michael Hove is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological Science at Fitchburg State University's School of Health and Natural Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University (Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience), an M.A. from the University of Munich (Educational Psychology), and a B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis (Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology).
Research Interests: Dr. Hove investigates rhythm and timing mechanisms, sensorimotor synchronization, music cognition, auditory perception, and their applications to neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease and ADHD. His work explores how altered states of consciousness (e.g., meditation) and multisensory integration influence perception and behavior. Recent projects include studying bass frequencies in music, effects of exercise on musical pleasure, and neural mechanisms underlying groove perception.
Publications: His research spans experimental psychology, neuroscience, and musicology, with notable contributions on rhythmic perception, fMRI studies of consciousness, and sensorimotor timing in clinical populations. Collaborations include work with institutions like MIT, University of Aarhus, and Kyoto Sangyo University.
Teaching: He teaches advanced courses such as Cognitive Neuroscience, Sensation and Perception, and specialized seminars on the Psychology of Music and Meditation Science.
