Prof. Dr. Michael Hollmann is a Principal Investigator (PI) at the Research Department of Neuroscience, affiliated with the Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Ruhr University Bochum. His research focuses on the biochemical mechanisms of receptor modulation in the nervous system.
The Receptor Biochemistry Laboratory led by Prof. Hollmann investigates how ion channel activity in non-NMDA receptors is dynamically regulated by accessory proteins like TARPs (transmembrane AMPA receptor regulatory proteins) and novel protein families. His work emphasizes receptor subunit specificity, splice variants, and differential brain expression patterns, including hippocampus-specific mechanisms.
Current projects explore analogous modulatory systems in NMDA and kainate receptors and probe the functional roles of orphan receptors within the glutamate receptor delta subfamily.
