Michael Hickner is the Craig A Rogerson Endowed Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at Michigan State University's College of Engineering. His research focuses on ion-containing polymers, water-polymer interactions, additive manufacturing of materials, and applications in energy and water treatment technologies.
- Education: Ph.D. & M.Eng. in Chemical Engineering (Virginia Tech, 2003 & 2002)
- B.S. in Chemical Engineering (Michigan Technological University, 1999)
Current projects include federally-funded research on fuel cells and flow batteries through the Department of Energy. His work combines advanced spectroscopic techniques with materials science to address critical challenges in energy conversion systems.
Notable scientific contributions appear in Nature Energy and Nature Chemistry, focusing on membrane technologies for CO2 electrolysis. Key methods involve Ziegler-Natta polymerization and 3D printing of micropatterned membranes.
- Young Investigator Awards (ONR/ARO, 2008)
- ORAU Ralph E. Powe Award (2008)
- 3M Non-tenured Faculty Grant (2009)
- PECASE Award (2010)
- ACS PMSE Cooperative Research Award (2019)
