Dr Michael Hawcroft is a University Lecturer (CUF) in French and Tutorial Fellow at Keble College, University of Oxford. He is affiliated with the Faculty of Medieval & Modern Languages, specializing in 17th-century French drama, particularly the works of Molière and Racine. His research explores theatrical performance, textual analysis, and the intersection of stage design with literary form.
Teaching focuses on French language and literature from the 16th to 20th centuries, emphasizing historical and critical engagement with texts. His publications include articles on Molière’s Tartuffe, Racine’s dramatic techniques, and early modern theatre practices, as well as books like Molière: Reasoning with Fools (2007) and Word as Action (1992).
Research interests span early modern French literature, theatre history, and the material conditions of theatrical performance. He holds an M.A. and D.Phil. from the University of Oxford.
