Michael Hand is a Professor of Philosophy of Education at the University of Birmingham, serving as Director of Postgraduate Research in the School of Education. Additionally, he holds an Adjunct Professorship at the Education University of Hong Kong. His academic roles include Vice-Chair of the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain, Series Editor of the Bloomsbury Philosophy of Education book series, and Co-Editor of the Journal of Philosophy in Schools. His research focuses on moral, political, religious, and philosophical education, with particular attention to extremism, relationships/sex education, autonomy, and concepts like indoctrination and punishment. He coordinates the School’s Philosophy of Education Research Seminar Series.
Education background: BA and MA from the University of Cambridge, MSc from the University of Manchester, and DPhil from the University of Oxford. His work emphasizes rational moral education and the justification of moral standards. Notable publications include A Theory of Moral Education (2018), Education, Ethics and Experience (2015), and Patriotism in Schools (2011).
