Michael H. Taylor is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and a State Specialist with University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. His research focuses on natural resource economics, environmental policy, wildfire management, and regional economic development. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland (2014) and a B.A. from McGill University (2002).
Dr. Taylor's teaching includes core graduate courses in microeconomic theory and undergraduate natural resource economics. His research emphasizes the economic implications of wildfire risk mitigation, water resource allocation, invasive species management, and public land policies. Notable outreach activities include leading a natural resource needs assessment for Nevada conservation districts and developing strategic plans for native plant industries.
He has secured over $5 million in grant funding, including a USDA grant on snowmelt and water infrastructure. Recent publications address wildfire policy effectiveness, social comparison messaging in resource conservation, and the economic impacts of invasive annual grasses. His work bridges academic research with practical solutions for Nevada’s environmental and economic challenges.
Professional service includes chairing the UNR Economics Department Seminar Committee and advising doctoral and master's students. Awards include an Editor’s Choice Award (2013) for contributions to rangeland restoration economics.
