Dr. Michael Gotsbacher is a Senior Lecturer in Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry at the School of Medical Sciences, University of Sydney. He holds affiliations with The Centre for Drug Discovery Innovation and the Charles Perkins Centre. His research focuses on neurodegenerative disorders, particularly investigating protein degradation mechanisms targeting TDP-43 aggregates in ALS and FTD, alongside developing mass spectrometry methods for ligand discovery. He coordinates the medicinal chemistry course (MCHM3x01), achieving a 4.5/5 student satisfaction score in 2024. Current research projects include PROTAC development for TDP-43, neuroprotective drug imaging via mass spectrometry, and PET-labeled bacteriophage biodistribution studies. Notable awards include the 2023 Charles Perkins Centre Professional Development Award and the 2019 Archibald D. Olle Award. Gotsbacher has supervised 4 PhD graduates and multiple Honours students, with alumni securing roles in non-academic sectors. His lab collaborates with institutions like the Brain and Mind Centre and Yonsei University (South Korea).
Grants include Neurodrug Funding Scheme (2024), Charles Perkins Seed Funding (2022), and The ALS Association Research Grant (2024). His work spans themes in Cancer, Neurological Disorders, and Infection Research, emphasizing multi-omics approaches and drug design.
