Michael Goryll is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU), affiliated with the Fulton Schools of Engineering. He joined ASU in 2007 and holds a Ph.D. and diploma in Physics from RWTH Aachen University, Germany. His postdoctoral work focused on biosensors at ASU (2003–2005), followed by research at Germany's Research Centre Juelich on SiGe Chemical Vapor Deposition and biosensor development.

Research Interests: Goryll specializes in Si/SiGe Chemical Vapor Deposition, self-organization in semiconductors, surface/interface physics, strain engineering in semiconductors, and novel CMOS materials. His work bridges nanotechnology, energy systems, and biomedical applications, including nanopore sensors and solar cell efficiency optimization.
Grants & Collaborations:
- NSF CAREER Award (2012–2017) for voltage-gated solid-state nanopore research
- NSF-funded work on diatom nanopore membranes (2011–2016)
- Collaborations with Sandia National Labs and Georgia Tech on nanotechnology and radiation sensors
Teaching: Leads graduate courses in quantum mechanics for engineers, photovoltaic energy conversion, and digital design fundamentals. Supervises honors theses and directed studies in electrical engineering.
Labs/Teams: Active in the ASU Nanotechnology Group and Sensor Signal Processing Research initiatives, focusing on flexible electronics and biomimetic sensors.
