Michael Frank is the Benjamin Scott Crocker Professor of Human Biology and Professor of Linguistics at Stanford University. He directs the Symbolic Systems Program and leads the Language and Cognition Lab in the Department of Psychology. His research examines children's language acquisition and its intersection with social cognition, employing computational modeling, behavioral experiments, and innovative methods like large-scale web studies and head-mounted cameras.
Frank's research interests center on developmental psychology and language learning mechanisms. He investigates how children acquire language through computational approaches, focusing on the interplay between linguistic development and social understanding. His work emphasizes open science principles, resulting in platforms like Wordbank (open vocabulary database), MetaLab (developmental meta-analyses), and ManyBabies (large-scale replication projects).
Frank's recent publications demonstrate strong trends in computational modeling of language acquisition, cross-cultural developmental studies, and methodological innovations in developmental research. His work consistently integrates cognitive science theories with computational approaches to understand learning mechanisms.
Frank oversees the Language and Cognition Lab, which develops tools for developmental research including the BabyView camera system for capturing infant perspectives. His teaching includes courses on experimental methods, developmental psychology, and interdisciplinary seminars on language acquisition.
