Michael F. Tweedle is an Adjunct Professor in the Chemistry Department at Ohio State University (OSU) and holds the Stefanie Spielman Chair in Cancer Imaging in Radiology and the James Comprehensive Cancer Center. He directs the Wright Center Molecular Imaging (MI) Agents Laboratory. Previously, he held academic and industrial roles, including at the University of Pennsylvania and leadership positions in pharmaceutical companies like Bristol-Myers Squibb and Bracco Research USA. His expertise spans inorganic chemistry, diagnostic imaging, and theranostic drug development.
Education: B.A. from Knox College (1973), Ph.D. from Rice University (1978), and a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University (1978–81).
Research focuses on hyper-effective cancer therapy through personalized biochemical imaging and theranostics. His lab develops multifunctional molecules for targeted diagnostics and therapies, such as the 177LuAMBA radiotheranostic. Challenges include minimizing organ toxicity via cleavable linkers and advancing intra-operative imaging technologies.
Scientific achievements include the Harry Fisher Medal (2005) for contributions to radiopharmaceuticals. Current funding comes from OSU, with NIH and NCI as potential future sources. He actively mentors graduate students and collaborates across disciplines, including surgery and bioengineering.
Labs/Teams: Wright Center MI Agents Laboratory, interdisciplinary teams at OSU's James Comprehensive Cancer Center.
