Dr. Michael F. Harsch is an Associate Professor of National Security at the National Defense University (NDU), where he also serves as Course Director for the National Security Strategy and Policy program at the Eisenhower School. His research focuses on international security, armed conflict, and economic development. He is the author of the Oxford University Press book The Power of Dependence: NATO-UN Cooperation in Crisis Management, and his work appears in journals like the Journal of Politics, Joint Forces Quarterly, and Foreign Affairs.
Prior roles include Visiting Assistant Professor of International Relations at Boston University, Assistant Professor of Practice at NYU Abu Dhabi, and visiting scholar positions at Harvard’s Weatherhead Scholars Program and Stanford’s Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. He has also held visiting researcher roles at NYU New York, Johns Hopkins SAIS, and the World Bank.
His expertise spans interdisciplinary approaches to security policy, crisis management, and the intersection of international relations with global economic systems. He regularly contributes to policy-relevant discourse through media outlets like The Washington Post.
