Michael Ewens is the David L. and Elsie M. Dodd Professor of Finance at Columbia Business School and co-director of the Private Equity Program. He researches financial intermediation through private equity and startup financing, examining how financial intermediaries create value and address operational challenges. Additionally, he serves as a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and holds editorial positions at leading finance journals including Review of Financial Studies and Journal of Financial Economics.
His research explores critical intersections between private equity markets, entrepreneurial finance, and regulatory frameworks. Key interests include venture capital's role in startup ecosystems, economic impacts of media ownership changes, and regulatory costs affecting public companies. Recent work analyzes geographic disparities in venture funding and evolving startup financing models.
Ewens organizes significant academic initiatives including the Workshop on Entrepreneurial Finance (WEFI) and Columbia Private Equity Conference. He maintains open-source repositories of research data and code to support transparency in financial research.
