Michael E. Wysession is a Professor of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, with a courtesy affiliation in Environmental Studies. He holds a PhD from Northwestern University. His research focuses on Earth's inner structure, particularly the core-mantle boundary, seismic wave modeling, and forensic seismology. He is renowned for creating the first map of the Earth’s core-mantle boundary.
Research interests include core-mantle boundary dynamics, mantle attenuation causes, intraplate seismicity, and nuclear test identification. Supported by 22 NSF grants and multiple foundations (Packard, Kemper, Lilly, Pew), his work integrates computer modeling of seismic data to understand Earth composition and dynamics. His personal website features a 20-minute 'movie' visualizing Earth's core, mantle, and surface during earthquakes.
Labs/Teams: Affiliated with the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences. Grants: Over two decades of NSF funding and foundation support. Education: PhD in Geophysics from Northwestern University.
