Michael Drinnan is a Professor of Digital Healthcare Interventions at Teesside University's SHLS Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedic Practice department. He joined the university in November 2023 after a lengthy career in the NHS, where he led groups specializing in physiological measurement and medical device development. His academic work focuses on translating novel medical technologies into patient care while supporting healthcare professionals' clinical research through programs like the UK's Scientist Training Programme (STP).
Drinnan holds a PhD from Newcastle University (1997), titled 'Assessment of arousal in respiratory sleep disorders.' His research spans urology, respiratory medicine, ENT, and speech therapy, emphasizing med-tech innovation and clinical translation. He leads curriculum development for urodynamics in specialist training programs and serves on advisory councils like STERIC (IPEM's research council).
His research explores topics such as urodynamics optimization via machine learning, stroke-related swallowing safety screening, and pediatric IV infusion occlusion detection. He collaborates internationally, with recent projects funded by NHS and university partnerships. Notable projects include the LEAN Programme (2024-2025), addressing lifestyle interventions for health improvement.
Drinnan has authored over 140 publications, focusing on clinical trials, medical device validation, and patient outcomes. His work bridges clinical practice and technological innovation, aiming to enhance healthcare delivery through evidence-based solutions.
