Michael Disher is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Bethel University (College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Business), joining in 2023. His research focuses on the economics of crime, urban economics, and public policy impacts on marginalized communities.
Education:
- B.A. in Economics from Wheaton College (2016)
- M.A. in Economics from University of Illinois (2023)
- Ph.D. in Economics from University of Illinois (2023)
Research Interests: Investigates urban poverty dynamics, public sector interventions, policing strategies, immigration enforcement effects, and mental health within criminal justice systems. His work combines empirical analysis with policy recommendations to address systemic inequalities.
Teaching & Mentoring: Taught microeconomics at University of Illinois, and has experience as a calculus teaching assistant and camp counselor. Actively mentored high school students in Chicago's West Side community.
Community Engagement: Participated in urban poverty-focused experiential learning programs, and engaged with local church communities in Minneapolis/St. Paul areas emphasizing neighborhood service.
