Michael Diercks is a Professor of Linguistics and Cognitive Science at Pomona College, where he has served since 2010. He coordinates the Linguistics program and conducts research primarily on the syntax and morphology of East African languages, with specializations in Bantu and Nilotic languages. His work integrates theoretical frameworks with language documentation, particularly focusing on understudied languages of Western Kenya.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Linguistics, Georgetown University (2010)
- M.S. in Linguistics, Georgetown University (2008)
- B.A. summa cum laude, Houghton College (2004)
Diercks' research explores three primary domains: 1) Syntactic and morphological theory, especially agreement systems and noun phrase licensing; 2) The interface between information structure and syntax in Bantu and Nilotic languages; and 3) Documentation of endangered Luyia subgroup languages (Lubukusu, Lutirichi, Luwanga, Llogoori). He also leads the Developmental Minimalist Syntax project investigating connections between syntactic theory and child language acquisition. A key career focus involves empowering African linguists through collaborative research and professional development initiatives.
His recent publications demonstrate strong emphasis on Bantu morphosyntax (particularly object marking), information structure, and Minimalist syntax theory. Many publications analyze Lubukusu and related languages, with theoretical implications extending beyond African linguistics. Recurring themes include the syntax-pragmatics interface, parametric variation, and documentation methodologies.
Awards and Grants:
- Wig Distinguished Professor Award for Teaching Excellence (2015)
- NSF Collaborative Research Grant: Structure and Tone in Luyia ($485,000 total, 2014)
- Pomona College Hirsch Research Initiation Grant ($13,205, 2013)
- NSF Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant ($11,951, 2010)
Diercks directs major documentation projects on Kenyan Bantu languages and co-leads the Developmental Minimalist Syntax research group. He maintains active collaborations with linguists at multiple institutions including University of Missouri and University of Maryland. His teaching includes syntax, morphology, field methods, and introductory linguistics courses.
