Michael Craig is an Assistant Professor jointly appointed between the School for Environment and Sustainability and the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan. His research focuses on decarbonizing energy systems while ensuring climate resilience, with a particular emphasis on power system optimization, policy analysis, and resource adequacy under climate uncertainty.
- PhD in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University (2017)
- MS in Technology and Policy from MIT (2014)
- BA in Environmental Studies (Ecology) from Washington University in St. Louis (2010)
His work addresses critical challenges in integrating climate data into energy-system models to improve decision-making for grid reliability and decarbonization. He has contributed to studies published in Nature Energy, Nature Climate Change, and Joule, focusing on topics like small modular nuclear reactors, renewable energy zoning, and grid resilience during extreme weather events.
- NSF CAREER Award recipient (2022)
- IISE Energy Systems Division's Outstanding Young Investigator Award (2022)
Michael serves on advisory committees for climate adaptation initiatives led by industry and national labs. His research has been featured in over 20 media outlets, including Michigan Public, Marketplace, and The Washington Post, discussing topics like the economic value of rooftop solar under climate change and grid vulnerability to extreme weather.
