Michael Chang is a Research Fellow at the University of Bristol's School of Civil, Aerospace and Design Engineering and holds an external position as Programme Manager - Planning and Health at the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities. His work bridges urban planning and public health to address systemic health inequalities through spatial interventions.
His research focuses on integrating public health into spatial planning frameworks, particularly within England's context. Key areas include analyzing how planning systems influence health outcomes, developing systems-based approaches for health-oriented spatial planning, and evaluating policy reforms. His methodologies emphasize narrative synthesis, literature reviews, and policy discourse analysis to translate academic insights into practical public health applications.
Recent publications demonstrate consistent focus on England's planning-health nexus, with trends showing increasing emphasis on evidence-based policy reform and systems thinking. His work identifies spatial planning as a critical lever for population health improvement, highlighting gaps between policy intentions and local implementation.
As Principal Investigator for the Truud project (2019-2024), he led a multi-institutional effort tackling root causes of unhealthy urban decisions. This research examined decision-making processes, health inequality drivers, and real estate sector influences within UK urban environments, generating significant policy engagement including Bluesky discussions and Mendeley readership.
