Michael Celia is the Theodora Shelton Pitney Professor of Environmental Studies and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University. His research program focuses on subsurface energy systems and environmental applications, particularly geological carbon sequestration, multiphase flow modeling, and shale-gas systems.
His work develops simulation tools for CO2 migration and leakage assessment in carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, multi-scale modeling of fluid flow in porous media, and methane emissions from hydrocarbon infrastructure. As part of Princeton's Carbon Mitigation Initiative, he investigates CO2 injection into reactive basalt formations and analyzes large-scale CCS infrastructure deployment.
His publication record demonstrates expertise in vertically integrated modeling approaches, pore-network simulations, and field-scale reservoir modeling. Recent research emphasizes practical applications in carbon storage engineering, methane mitigation strategies, and sustainable subsurface energy solutions.
