Dr. Michael Castellano is a Professor of Agronomy and Lead of the Iowa Nitrogen Initiative at Iowa State University, holding the William T. Frankenberger Professorship in Soil Science. His research focuses on biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen in agroecosystems, aiming to balance agricultural productivity with environmental protection. Key areas include nitrogen management, soil health, cover crops, and nutrient reduction strategies.
He oversees projects such as optimizing nitrogen fertilizer use, assessing nutrient reduction practices, and improving cover crop BMPs. His work integrates agronomic principles with ecological and biogeochemical insights to address global challenges in nitrogen use efficiency.
Research interests emphasize sustainable agriculture, soil nitrogen dynamics, and environmental impact mitigation. His team includes graduate students Kyle Godwin and Lauren Schwarck, and postdocs like Yunjiao Zhu. Collaborations involve interdisciplinary efforts in soil science, crop modeling, and sensor technology development for real-time nitrogen monitoring.
Dr. Castellano’s leadership in the Iowa Nitrogen Initiative promotes science-based solutions for reducing nitrate leaching and greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining crop yields. His contributions advance both theoretical understanding and practical agricultural practices.
