Michael Callaghan is a Reader at the School of Computing, Engineering and Intelligent Systems, Ulster University. Research interests include VR/AR applications in education, voice-driven interfaces, and game-based learning strategies. Notable achievements include winning the International Educational Games Competition (2016, 2019) and shortlisting for THE Awards 2010. He serves on editorial boards for journals like International Journal of Online Engineering and reviews for IEEE, AHRC, and EU grants.
His work emphasizes accessibility and creativity in engineering education through projects like Circuit Warz and Engineering Education Island. He has pioneered virtual laboratories and remote experimentation systems since 2002, integrating immersive technologies to enhance student engagement and skill development.
