Dr. Michael C. Nevitt is a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco. He is a leading expert on the epidemiology of osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee and hip, with a distinguished career focused on understanding the risk factors, progression, and imaging biomarkers of joint diseases.
Dr. Nevitt leads the Coordinating Center for two landmark studies of knee OA: the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) and the Multicenter Osteoarthritis (MOST) Study. These are the first large longitudinal cohort studies in the US to focus on OA of the knee using MR imaging. The OAI provides a public use dataset that is widely used by investigators worldwide. He is also the Principal Investigator of the SOF Hip OA study.
His research focuses on osteoarthritis epidemiology, with particular emphasis on imaging biomarkers and the relationship between bone mineral density and joint disease progression. His work has significantly advanced our understanding of how changes in bone structure precede the onset of radiographic hip OA and how high bone mineral density affects knee OA development.
Analysis of Dr. Nevitt's publications reveals a consistent focus on methodological rigor in OA research, with significant contributions to imaging protocols, diagnostic criteria, and longitudinal study design. His work spans both knee and hip OA, with important connections to osteoporosis research.
- Imaging innovations - Development of standardized MRI protocols for knee OA assessment
- Risk factor identification - Establishing relationships between bone geometry and OA onset
- Diagnostic criteria - Defining incident radiographic hip OA for epidemiological studies
As principal investigator of major longitudinal studies, Dr. Nevitt has created valuable resources for the research community while advancing our fundamental understanding of osteoarthritis pathogenesis and progression.
