Michael C. Cross is Professor Emeritus of Theoretical Physics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He served on the faculty from 1984 until his retirement in 2016. His primary research areas include theoretical physics with specialization in nonequilibrium systems, pattern formation mechanisms, and spatiotemporal chaos dynamics.
Educational background includes a BA (1972) and PhD (1975) from the University of Cambridge. His research employs analytical and computational methods to study collective phenomena in physical systems far from equilibrium.
Teaching contributions include undergraduate and graduate courses in statistical mechanics and chaos theory. Developed instructional resources including lecture notes on 'Introduction to Chaos' and 'Collective Effects in Equilibrium and Nonequilibrium Physics'.
