Michael Bösch

Michael Bösch serves as Professor of Resource Efficiency at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), School of Engineering and the Environment. His work addresses critical challenges in resource scarcity and waste management through systemic sustainability frameworks.

His research prioritizes resource efficiency and circular economy principles, emphasizing holistic product life-cycle management—from design and usage to end-of-life recovery. Key focus areas include preserving resource value, optimizing battery systems for industrial applications, and integrating technological, economic, and policy dimensions to minimize waste generation.

Currently leading a Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) project analyzing thousands of lead-acid batteries across infrastructure sites, Professor Bösch develops strategies for extending battery utility through secondary applications and recycling. This initiative demonstrates practical implementation of circular economy models to recover valuable raw materials while mitigating environmental hazards from heavy metals.
