Michael Bizimis is a Professor in the School of the Earth, Ocean and Environment at the University of South Carolina, serving as Graduate Director. His research focuses on isotope geochemistry, mantle processes, and subduction zone dynamics. He earned his Ph.D. from Florida State University and has held positions at FSU, FIU, and USC since 2009.
His education includes a Ph.D. in Isotope Geochemistry and Igneous Petrology (Florida State University) and a B.Sc. in Economic Geology (National Kapodistrian University of Athens).
Research interests center on radiogenic (Hf, Nd, Sr, Pb, Os) and stable (Mo, Fe) isotopes to study mantle heterogeneity, serpentinization, and elemental cycling in subduction zones. Recent work explores boron-molybdenum isotopes in Aleutian volcanism and water distribution in oceanic lithosphere.
His publication trends emphasize high-resolution isotopic tracers for mantle processes, with recent articles focusing on carbonatite systems, Siberian Trap magmatism, and subduction fluid cycling. Analytical innovations include developing Li/Mg isotope methods and fluid inclusion studies.
Scientific awards include the Fulbright Specialist Award (2019), two Highly Cited Paper Awards (2016), and Breakthrough Star Award (2014). He has secured $2M+ in NSF/USGS funding since 2009.
Advising includes 13 Ph.D. and 7 M.S. students; lab leadership involves directing the Center for Elemental Mass Spectrometry (CEMS). Collaborations span 15+ institutions globally, focusing on experimental petrology and subduction zone modeling.
