Michael Beckley is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Tufts University, Director of the Asia Program at the Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI), and a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). He is a leading expert on U.S.-China relations, great power competition, and international security, frequently advising U.S. defense and intelligence agencies.
- Ph.D. in Political Science, Columbia University (2012)
- B.A. in International Studies, Emory University (2004)
Beckley’s research focuses on the balance of power between the United States and China, emphasizing net assessments of national power. He challenges prevailing narratives of American decline, arguing in his acclaimed book Unrivaled that structural advantages in demography, geography, institutions, and innovation sustain U.S. primacy. His second book, Danger Zone (co-authored with Hal Brands), warns of a near-term, high-intensity phase in U.S.-China competition. His work combines historical analysis, quantitative methods, and policy relevance.
His recent publications analyze deterrence strategy, alliance cohesion in the Indo-Pacific, technological competition, and crisis scenarios involving Taiwan and the South China Sea. He frequently contributes expert commentary to shape U.S. foreign policy and congressional strategy.
- Multiple award-winning articles in international security
- Regular speaker and commentator on U.S. foreign policy and Asian security
Beckley has advised the U.S. Department of Defense and Intelligence Community and previously held fellowships at Harvard’s Kennedy School and positions at RAND and the Carnegie Endowment. He leads FPRI’s Asia Program and is actively engaged in public scholarship through reports, podcasts, and events.
