Michael Barnes is a Research Fellow at the ARC Centre of Excellence for 21st Century Weather, located within the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment at Monash University, Australia. He is currently accepting PhD students and serves as an Associate Editor for the Monthly Weather Review.

Research Interests:
Michael’s work centres on synoptic-scale atmospheric dynamics, with particular emphasis on Rossby-wave breaking, extratropical cyclones, cut-off lows and subtropical rainfall. His investigations improve understanding of extreme weather and underpin better prediction of high-impact events over Australia and southern Africa.
Publications trend:
Across 11 peer-reviewed articles (2019-2023) his research spans dynamical meteorology, heavy-rainfall mechanisms, sea-ice forecasting and regional climate modelling, showcasing a blend of theoretical idealised modelling and operational evaluation.
