Dr. Michael Bachmann is a Senior Lecturer in Theatre, Film & Television Studies at the University of Glasgow. He previously held positions as Junior Professor for Theatre and Comparative Media Studies at the University of Mainz (2010-2014) and Visiting Scholar roles at the Universities of Berne and Vienna. His research focuses on theatre and media history, with specializations in cross-media dramaturgies, Holocaust representation, and the interplay between theatre and institutions like radio, film, and archives.
Education: PhD in Performance and Media Studies (University of Mainz). Research interests include radio drama, puppet/object theatre, digital performance, and museum studies. His first book Der abwesende Zeuge (2010) examines testimonial discourse in Holocaust representation, while his upcoming work explores dramaturgies of interiority since the 19th century.
Notable awards include the 'Best Teacher in the College of Arts' (Glasgow, 2015-16) and the Charles Davis Award (2008). He has supervised over 12 PhDs, examining topics like live art, refugee performance, and intergenerational trauma. Current projects involve archival strategies in theatre and digital performance.
Teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate courses on theatre history, interculturalism, and contemporary dramaturgy. External roles include membership in AHRC and ESF review bodies and board positions with The Work Room.
