Michael Aziz

Michael Aziz serves as the Gene and Tracy Sykes Professor of Materials and Energy Technologies within the Energy Resources & Energy Systems Engineering department at Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. He leads the Aziz Group, a multidisciplinary research team focused on solving critical energy and climate challenges through electrochemical innovation.

His research spans electrochemistry, materials science, and chemical engineering with emphasis on aqueous organic redox flow batteries and electrochemical carbon dioxide removal systems. The group investigates fundamental electrochemical processes while developing practical engineering solutions for renewable energy integration and climate mitigation. Current projects include direct air capture technologies, hydrogen storage systems, and advanced battery chemistries with commercialization pathways.

Analysis of recent publications reveals strong focus on operando characterization techniques for electrochemical systems, novel carbon capture methodologies, and longevity improvements for flow battery components.
