Dr Michael Aspinall is a Reader in Nuclear Engineering at Lancaster University, affiliated with the School of Engineering. He serves as Director of Postgraduate Teaching and supervises undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD projects. His roles include convening modules like Engineering Project Management and Instrumentation and Control. Previously, he was a Senior Lecturer in Digital Engineering at Lancaster and Lecturer in Biomedical Engineering at Aston University.

Dr Aspinall’s research focuses on nuclear engineering and radiation detection technologies. Key areas include neutron spectroscopy, pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) for neutron/gamma separation, nuclear safeguards, and space weather monitoring via ground-level neutron detectors. He develops radiation-tolerant robotics for nuclear environments and electrochemical tritium detection systems. His work bridges digital signal processing, computational simulations, and hardware-software integration.
His recent publications highlight advancements in neutron/gamma PSD techniques, cosmic ray neutron monitoring using boron-coated detectors, and molecular dynamics studies on radiation effects in materials. These reflect his expertise in detector design, Monte Carlo simulations, and semiconductor degradation analysis.
