Michael Aref is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the Department of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering (The Grainger College of Engineering). He holds dual degrees: an M.D. from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign (2006) and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering (2003), alongside earlier degrees in Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics. His academic career spans over 16 years in his current role.
Research interests focus on medical imaging technologies, particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for tumor targeting and diagnostic applications. He has contributed to advancements in MRI contrast agents, tumor vascular permeability analysis, and imaging resolution optimization in oncology and radiology.
Awarded certifications include Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (2018) and Fellow of Hospital Medicine (2016).
