Michael A. Simons is the John V. Brennan Professor of Law and Ethics at St. John’s University School of Law. He joined the faculty in 1998 and served as Dean from 2009 to 2024. Before academia, he practiced as a criminal defense attorney, federal prosecutor, and law clerk. He teaches criminal law and evidence, and his scholarship focuses on sentencing, prosecutorial decision-making, and punishment theory. He was honored as 'Professor of the Year' in 2000 and 2011.
Prof. Simons holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School (magna cum laude, 1989) and a B.A. from College of the Holy Cross (magna cum laude, 1986). He is a Senior Fellow at the Vincentian Center for Church and Society and chairs the New York State Commission on Prosecutorial Conduct. His public service includes roles on the Commission on Reimagining the Future of New York’s Courts and the NYC Mayor’s Advisory Committee on the Judiciary.
His research integrates practical legal experience with theoretical inquiry, addressing topics like sentencing reform, prosecutorial ethics, and the intersection of religion and criminal justice. His publications span law reviews, encyclopedias, and policy analyses, reflecting his commitment to bridging academic and real-world legal challenges.
