Dr. Mia Revels serves as a faculty researcher in the Department of Biological Sciences within Northeastern State University's College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences. Her work focuses on avian ecology with specialization in Swainson's Warbler studies across Oklahoma's bottomland hardwood ecosystems.
Her research interests center on Avian Ecology and Behavior, particularly Swainson's Warbler breeding biology. Current projects include documenting natural history traits of this elusive species, examining territory responses to forest succession and weather events, recording nocturnal flight calls to study migration patterns, and analyzing nest location habitat characteristics. Field methods involve radio telemetry, mist netting in Little River National Wildlife Refuge, and close observation of brooding behaviors including interactions with brood parasites like Brown-headed Cowbirds.
Publications demonstrate consistent contributions to ornithological knowledge since 2003, with emphasis on rare bird documentation, parasitism studies, and Oklahoma-specific avifauna. Key trends include long-term ecological monitoring in challenging habitats and innovative field techniques for studying cryptic species.
Dr. Revels actively mentors undergraduate researchers, currently supervising Honors student Darby Hanna's project on parental provisioning contributions in Swainson's Warblers. Her fieldwork includes extensive work in Crooked Creek and Little River areas using canoes for access to remote bottomland habitats.
