Dr. Mia Burleigh is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Health and Life Sciences, University of the West of Scotland. She holds Charted Scientist status and is an Accredited Sport and Exercise Physiologist via the British Association of Sport and Exercise Scientists. Her work bridges exercise physiology, microbiology, and cardiovascular health, with a focus on dietary nitrate, the oral microbiome, and their systemic impacts.
Education:
- BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science, UWS (2016)
- PhD in Health Sciences, supported by the Hannah Research Foundation (2020)
Research Interests: Dr. Burleigh explores how dietary nitrate interacts with the oral microbiome to influence cardiovascular health. Her work highlights the role of nitric oxide in conditions like Alzheimer’s and periodontitis, and evaluates novel interventions (e.g., beetroot juice, probiotics). She also collaborates with tensARC Ltd. on mask technology for respiratory protection.
Advising & Grants: Supervises three PhD/MRes students focusing on nitrate’s role in oral health and antimicrobial resistance. Her research is funded by UWS and the Scottish Funding Council. She has co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles, emphasizing topics like microbiome modulation, nitrate metabolism, and exercise physiology.
