Dr. Mia Bennett is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Washington, part of the College of Arts & Sciences. Previously, she taught at the University of Hong Kong. She holds a PhD in Geography from UCLA, an MPhil in Polar Studies from the University of Cambridge, and a BA in Political Science & European Studies from UCLA. Her research focuses on the geopolitics of infrastructure development in the Arctic and orbital space, employing critical remote sensing, ethnography, and geovisualization to critique frontier-making processes.
Her work examines Indigenous empowerment, Asian geopolitical dynamics, and satellite observation, supported by grants from the NSF, Fulbright Arctic Initiative, and others. Key awards include the Richard Morrill Public Outreach Award. Bennett’s blog Cryopolitics explores Arctic and space-related themes, with articles analyzing geopolitical shifts, climate impacts, and infrastructure projects. She also collaborates on projects like InfraNorth and JUSTNORTH, advancing just and sustainable Arctic development. Her research highlights the intersection of environmental change, technology, and human agency in contested regions.
