MiYoung Kwon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Northeastern University, leading the Kwon Lab for Low Vision and Brain Research. She holds a Ph.D. in cognitive/biological psychology from the University of Minnesota (2010) and completed postdoctoral research at USC and Harvard Medical School. Previously, she was faculty at the UAB Medical School in Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
Her research focuses on understanding visual perception in individuals with impaired vision, particularly exploring brain plasticity responses to visual deficits like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and amblyopia. Her work combines psychophysical experiments, neuroimaging (fMRI/EEG), computational modeling, and clinical assessments to develop rehabilitative strategies for low vision patients.
Key research areas include:
- Impact of visual deficits (blur, low contrast, field loss) on daily tasks like reading and navigation
- Cortical reorganization following vision loss
- Development of training regimens to enhance visual function
Her studies have been supported by grants from the National Eye Institute (RO1), Research to Prevent Blindness, and the Eye Sight Foundation of Alabama. The Kwon Lab emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches and translational research to bridge basic science with clinical applications.
Publications highlight advancements in understanding mesopic vision, glaucomatous damage effects, and aging-related visual changes. The lab actively investigates binocular vision mechanisms and the role of deep learning in retinal layer analysis.
