Mi Yung Yoon is Professor of International Studies and holds the James T. McManaman Chair in Political Science at Hanover College, where she has taught since 1993. She specializes in international and comparative politics with a focus on Africa and gender dynamics, regularly conducting field research across sub-Saharan Africa.
Her educational background includes:
- B.A. from Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul, South Korea
- M.A. from Jackson State University
- Ph.D. in Political Science from Florida State University
Dr. Yoon's research centers on African politics, gender representation in sub-Saharan legislatures, and Korea-Africa relations. She investigates colonialism's legacy in territorial disputes, effectiveness of gender quotas, and bilateral development assistance mechanisms. Her work bridges theoretical frameworks with empirical field studies across Tanzania, Mauritius, and Seychelles.
Her scholarly output reveals consistent thematic evolution from foundational studies on colonialism and border conflicts (2004-2009) toward gender-focused analyses of political representation (2011-2014), culminating in recent examinations of Korea's development policies in Africa (2019-2025). The publications demonstrate methodological diversity spanning case studies, comparative analysis, and policy evaluation.
Her research excellence has been recognized through:
- Senior Fulbright Research Scholarship (U.S. Department of State, 2011)
- Daryl R. Karns Award for Scholarly and Creative Activity (Hanover College, 2012)
- Korea Foundation Fellowship (2019)
Dr. Yoon has secured competitive research funding enabling extensive fieldwork across Africa, including Fulbright-supported investigations into women's political participation and Korea Foundation-funded studies on bilateral development cooperation. Her collaborative projects frequently involve co-authorship with African scholars like Idda Lyatonga Swai and regional experts.
