Mi-Young Kim is an Associate Professor of Computing Science at the University of Alberta's Augustana Campus. Her research develops NLP and machine learning methods for specialized domains including legal text analysis and healthcare applications.
Research focuses on information extraction, text entailment, and explainable AI systems. She co-founded the COLIEE international competition on legal information extraction and has led projects on medical term recognition in noisy clinical texts.
Current work involves transformer-based legal document retrieval, neural network rationalization techniques, and cross-domain duplicate question detection. Teaching includes artificial intelligence courses and computational thinking.
Dr. Kim supervises graduate students in computing science and collaborates with legal and healthcare institutions on text mining applications.
