Lukasz Mezyk is a researcher at the Institute of Heat Engineering, Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering, Warsaw University of Technology. His work focuses on electro-thermal satellite propulsion systems, particularly resistojet thrusters powered by supercapacitor-based energy storage.
- Developed a novel resistojet thruster using capillary tubes and supercapacitors for efficient energy delivery
- Optimized thruster geometry (tetrahedron shape) and gas flow stages to minimize thermal losses
- Tested with ammonia, propane, and butane propellants, achieving specific impulse improvements (1400 m/s vs. 900 m/s for cold gas)
His research addresses critical challenges in small/medium satellite propulsion, balancing thrust requirements with energy efficiency and safety. The project culminated in a laboratory model by June 2013, demonstrating the feasibility of supercapacitor-powered resistojets for missions requiring 0.1-1 N thrust. Key innovations included a three-stage gas heating process and modular heater design with ceramic insulation to prevent short circuits.
