Meyeon Park, MD, MAS is a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. She serves as the medical director of the UCSF PKD Center of Excellence and is the principal investigator of the UCSF Cardiovascular Risk After Kidney Transplantation (CARAKTER) study. Her research program focuses on patient outcomes in genetic kidney diseases, particularly polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and APOL1-mediated kidney disease.
Education:
- College: Harvard College
- Medical School: University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (MD, 2006)
- Internal Medicine Residency: Yale-New Haven Hospital (2009)
- Nephrology Fellowship: University of California, San Francisco (2013)
- MAS in Clinical Research: University of California, San Francisco (2012)
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Champion Training: UCSF (2019)
Dr. Park's research interests center on genetic kidney diseases, with a particular focus on polycystic kidney disease and APOL1-mediated kidney disease. Her work examines the intersection between cardiovascular disease and kidney outcomes, exploring how cardiovascular conditions affect kidney injury and disease progression. She has made significant contributions to understanding patient experiences with genetic testing, pain management, and quality of life in ADPKD, as well as the pharmacologic management of these conditions.
Analysis of Dr. Park's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on translational research connecting cardiovascular health with kidney disease outcomes. Her work spans clinical trials of novel therapies like SGLT2 inhibitors for ADPKD, metabolic imaging techniques for transplant monitoring, and large-scale registry studies examining patient-reported outcomes. A notable trend is her focus on real-world implementation of genetic testing and specialized therapies like tolvaptan in clinical practice settings.
Scientific Awards:
- National PKD Foundation Physician Gratitude Award (2017)
- Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Clinical Scientist Development Award (2015-2018)
- NIH NIDDK K23 Career Development Award (2013-2018)
- UCSF CTSI Pilot for Junior Investigators in Basic and Clinical/Translational Sciences (2015-2016)
- UCSF Department of Medicine Centers of Excellence in Patient Research Pilot Award (2014-2015)
Dr. Park has secured significant research funding as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH grants, including the NIH K23 Career Development Award and the NIH F32 Postdoctoral Fellowship. She currently serves as Co-Principal Investigator on the NIH R01-funded Living Donor Extended Time Outcomes (LETO) Study and the NIH U01-funded Maximizing geographic and scientific reach through a Northern California APOLLO Network. Her research portfolio demonstrates a strong commitment to addressing critical questions in kidney transplantation outcomes and genetic kidney diseases.
As Medical Director of the UCSF PKD Center of Excellence, Dr. Park leads a multidisciplinary team focused on advancing care for patients with polycystic kidney disease through clinical innovation, research, and education. Her work with the CARAKTER study specifically examines cardiovascular risk factors after kidney transplantation, addressing a critical gap in understanding post-transplant outcomes.
