Meryem Demir is a Lecturer (Preceptor in Modern Turkish) in the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations at Harvard University. She joined Harvard in 2018 after roles as the Atatürk Turkish Fellow at the University of Edinburgh and a lecturer at Middle East Technical University (Ankara). Her office is located at Harvard - CMES, #301 38 Kirkland St., Cambridge, MA 02138.
Dr. Demir holds a BA from Istanbul University, an MA from Marmara University (Turkish Education), and a PhD from Bilkent University (Turkish Literature). Her dissertation explored youth and idealism in late Ottoman novels, focusing on modernization themes.
Her teaching spans Turkish language (native/foreign), literary criticism, and cultural studies. Research interests include Ottoman modernization, stylistics, and discourse analysis, with a commitment to innovative pedagogy. She developed the digital project ZIPIR Turkish: Istanbul Streets Walls’ Writing, honored twice by Harvard’s Provost’s Award.
Award highlights include multiple teaching recognitions and a nomination for the MAFLT LCTL Innovation Award. Her work bridges Turkish language/literature studies with cross-cultural engagement through digital initiatives and critical analysis.
