Mert Gur is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computational and Systems Biology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He holds a PhD in Computational Sciences and Engineering from Koç University. His research integrates computational modeling and statistical thermodynamics to address challenges at the intersection of medicine, biology, and engineering. Key focuses include protein systems, drug targets like HLA-B51 for Behcet’s disease, cancer-associated mutations in CHK2 and Mutsα, and SARS-CoV-2 variant analysis.
- Education: PhD in Computational Sciences and Engineering, Koç University
His lab investigates protein dynamics through molecular simulations and elastic network models, exploring disease mechanisms, therapeutic strategies, and engineered nanobodies. Collaborations with the Ivet Bahar lab advance allostery research and functional protein modifications. The lab is based at 800 Murdoch I Bldg, Pittsburgh, with contact via gurmert@pitt.edu.
Research emphasizes motor proteins, nano-scaled biological machinery, and functional inferences from protein state transitions. Projects include designing cell-penetrating peptides targeting HLA-B51 and engineering dynein-based biological nanowalkers.
Labs/Teams: Active collaborations with the Ivet Bahar lab; lab website available for further details.
