Merlin Weichler

Merlin Weichler is a researcher at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, affiliated with the Marine Ecology department. He joined the institution in July 2024 as part of the working group "Coral Adaptions to Extremes" under Principal Investigator Dr. Marlene Wall.

Weichler's research focuses on understanding the ecological impacts of internal waves on tropical coral reefs, coral thermal resilience, and trophic dynamics. He is involved in the ReefCPTrace project, which investigates coral skeletal records for evidence of natural bleaching mitigation by internal waves, funded by the DFG Priority Program "Tropical Climate Variability and Coral Reefs" (SPP 2299, Project 441832482).

His work aligns with broader themes in Marine Ecology, including climate change effects on marine ecosystems, biogeochemical cycles, and ocean dynamics. Weichler's research integrates field studies, laboratory analyses, and climate modeling to address challenges in tropical marine conservation.
