Merle Tönnies is a Professor of English Literature and British Cultural Studies at the University of Paderborn, where she leads research and teaching in the Department of English and American Studies. She holds office hours on Tuesdays from 2-3 pm in Wintersemester 2024/25 and previously served as Deputy Chair of the Department (2007-2013).

- Postgraduate studies at Exeter College, Oxford (1988-1993)
- MA in English, Slavonic Studies, and Public Law from Ruhr University Bochum (1990-1991)
Her research focuses on Contemporary British Theatre, Gender Studies, and Visual Culture, with projects examining intersections of political rhetoric, spatial constructions, and identity in British cultural contexts. Recent work includes analyses of Dystopian Corona Narratives and New Labour's influence on theatre from the 1990s onward.
Key publications include co-edited volumes on Dys/Utopian Spaces and journal articles on pandemic narratives. She collaborates with institutions in the UK and Germany, including Portsmouth University and the Musicological Seminar Detmold/Paderborn.
