Meredith Schade

Dr. Meredith Schade serves as Associate Professor in both the Department of Medicine Division of Infectious Diseases and Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Penn State College of Medicine. She joined the faculty in 2014 after completing her Infectious Diseases fellowship at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, where she previously held positions in general internal medicine.

Her primary research focuses on bone and joint infections, particularly in patients with implanted hardware and those who inject drugs. She actively investigates musculoskeletal infections in people with opioid use disorder and atypical mycobacterial pathogens. Her clinical work centers on complicated bone and joint infections in adult patients, with significant contributions to integrated treatment models combining infectious disease care and addiction medicine.

Dr. Schade's publication record demonstrates expertise in opioid use disorder treatment within infectious disease contexts, including randomized trials of extended-release buprenorphine for hospitalized patients. Her research spans clinical trials methodology, microbiology of injection drug use complications, and novel orthopedic infections.

She actively mentors medical students, residents, and infectious disease fellows through case report collaborations and educational initiatives.
