Merce Galbany Casals

Mercè Galbany Casals is a Professor in the Department of Animal Biology, Plant Biology and Ecology at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Her work focuses on phylogenetics, biogeography, and evolutionary biology of Asteraceae (specifically Helichrysum species), with contributions to understanding plant invasions and climate stability. She leads the EVOLUTIONARY AND BIOGEOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF HELICHRYSUM IN THE AFROMONTANE AND AFROALPINE ARCHIPELAGOS project (2020–2024).

Her research integrates cladistics, molecular phylogenetics, and ecological modeling, addressing topics like lineage diversification in Madagascar’s mountains and climate stability over geological timescales. Collaborations span global institutions, including work on angiosperm evolution and invasive species dynamics in Mediterranean and Asian regions.
