Mengyuan Zhang is an Assistant Professor in Computer Systems at the Faculty of Science, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and a member of the Network Institute. Her research focuses on cybersecurity, network security, vulnerability analysis, and network function virtualization. Specific interests include zero-day attacks, attack surface reduction, and security mechanisms for embedded systems and IoT devices.
Her work explores cross-regional security practices, router configuration habits, and firmware vulnerabilities. Notable contributions include analyzing default router settings, developing vulnerability assessment tools (e.g., VIET), and studying cross-platform authentication mechanisms. She has published widely in top venues like IEEE Internet of Things Journal, CHI, and NordSec.
Current courses taught include Network Security, Security and Safety Engineering, and Software Threat Analysis. Collaborations span international teams, with a focus on improving network resilience against emerging threats.
