Mengxia Liu is an Assistant Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Yale University, with an additional appointment in Applied Physics. She leads the Liu Group, which focuses on advancing optoelectronic materials for energy, sensing, and information technologies. Her research emphasizes high-throughput methods for creating thin-film semiconductors using materials like metal halide perovskites and colloidal quantum dots, with applications in photodetectors, solar cells, LEDs, and lasers.
Dr. Liu holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and a B.Sc. from Tianjin University. Her work integrates time-resolved optical techniques to study electronic and structural dynamics across diverse length and time scales, enabling novel device concepts and performance optimization.
Key research interests include:
- Quantum dot-derived catalysts for CO2 reduction
- Lattice-anchored semiconductor stabilization
- Multiferroic semiconductors for spintronics
- Chiral materials for geometric optical sensing
Her group has produced impactful publications in Nature, Nature Electronics, and Nano Letters, among others. Awards include the 2024 ONR Young Investigator Award, 2023 Packard Fellowship, and 2019 MSCA Seal of Excellence Award.
Current advising includes graduate student Zhengjie Li. Ongoing projects leverage hybrid organic-inorganic inks, colloidal nanocrystals, and advanced spectroscopy to address challenges in energy and sensing. The Liu Group actively collaborates on lab-scale fabrication and device prototyping, with a focus on scalable, high-performance optoelectronics.
